The 12th year of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival

PHF 2026 – Heritage of Education August 18th to 30th

The Pondicherry Heritage Festival (PHF) enters its twelfth year with a renewed commitment to celebrating the unique identity of Pondicherry and its surroundings. What began in 2015 as an initiative to promote the conservation of the town’s remarkable architectural heritage has evolved into a vibrant celebration of its natural, cultural, spiritual and built heritage.

Each year, the festival highlights a different facet of Pondicherry’s rich legacy—from its natural ecosystems and cultural traditions to its architectural treasures. PHF 2026 celebrates the Heritage of Education— a theme deeply rooted in the town’s history and values.

The vision of great thinkers such as Thiruvalluvar, Subramania Bharati and Sri Aurobindo reminds us that education is the foundation of individual growth, social progress and national development. Inspired by this timeless vision, this year’s festival explores education in its many forms—from schools and colleges to culture, craftsmanship, the arts, nature, spirituality and lifelong learning—and its enduring role in shaping society.

Since its inception in 2015, the objectives of the festival have remained unchanged: 1) Foster pride in Pondicherry’s unique identity.
2) Showcase its rich heritage to visitors from India and around the world.
3) Bring together experts, historians, residents and institutions to celebrate and conserve this shared legacy.

The Pondicherry Heritage Festival is a volunteer-led initiative organised by People for Pondicherry’s Heritage, INTACH Pondicherry and PondyCAN, with the support of the AFP, EFEO, IFP and the Govt of Puducherry. The festival is enriched by the participation of numerous heritage and cultural organisations, including Gratitude Heritage, Kariappa House, La Maison de Bitasta, LAL, Pondicherry Sailing Association, Pondicherry Beach Escapes, Svarnim Puducherry and Palais de Mahe, along with many other partners. PondyLive continues as the festival’s online partner, Pondy Diaries has joined us this year and we look forward to welcoming many more media and social media partners in the years ahead.

Together, we invite you to celebrate the heritage that makes Pondicherry truly unique.

In sandy soil, when deep you delve, you reach the springs below;
The more you learn, the freer streams of wisdom flow. — Thirukkural

Three things are necessary to achieve this [freedom]. The first one is education; second is education; and the third one is also education. It means that anything except education cannot achieve what we require in our nation. I strongly believe in this. — Subramania Bharati

Home Rule and National Education are two inseparable ideals, and none who follows the one, can fail the other, unless he is entirely wanting either in sincerity or in vision. … the full soul rich with the inheritance of the past, the widening gains of the present, and the large potentiality of her future, can come only by a system of National Education. — Sri Aurobindo (1918) (CWSA 36:270-271)

Since events partners can join any time until the festival begins, this list can add events later. The above events are all confirmed.
